Mapping out FFglitch

Introduction

If you have never delved into glitch-art before due to its seemingly complex methods of creating visually appealing distortions, go no further, as in this tutorial I will be walking you step-by-step through the process of glitching your very own video. While the results can vary depending on your source file, you might find yourself surprised!

FFglitch

Created by Ramiro Polla, FFglitch is a multistream bitstream editor, or more simply, a program capable of modifying data in binary form. In this program, such editor is used to make percise adjustments to rawvideo, jpg, or avi data (inputs) in order to achieve a glitch effect (output). This tutorial is based on another made by Polla himself, but aims to go into further detail in regard to additional software required as well as step-by-step guidance.

To get a better grasp of what FFglitch is capable of, featured below is a bitstream edited clip from the 2014 video-game Shovel Knight. For more examples, visit Polla’s FFglitch Gallery on FFglitch’s official website or visit ffstrudel, the Instagram account associated with the program.
